**Note on Genetic Modification and Genetic selection:
On the ride there is mention of both Genetic modification and Genetic selection.
Genetic selection has been around for centuries – the seeds from the healthiest, highest yielding plants are selected for the next growing crop. Natural breeding method.
Genetic Modification – Is the plant being modified by scientists to produce the best yielding plant. Manipulation of a genes of an organisim(strictly an example of Genetic Modification: Jelly fish DNA with Corn – so that it sheds water easier when it rains).
There are mixed opinions on this topic……..
It looks like a great ride!
This is one of the better videos that I came across for the land Pavilion Greenhouse Tour:
Here’s what was presented on the tour:
The Tropics has the greatest diversity of fruits on the planet
ex: Coffee, rice, bananas, cacao.
Types of Plants adapted to growing in less than ideal conditions.
Fluted pumpkin – edible seeds and leaves, thrive in the poorest soil conditions in Africa – potential staple for millions of people.
Dragon Fruit – Cactus Family, rich in antioxidants
There could be new plants in the future that are just as popular as a Banana is today.
like the tilapia that is grown in the rice fields in Asia. Symbiotic relationship, fish live happily and the plant gets the nutrients, people harvest the plants and the fish.
30% of Fish consumed world wide is raised on a Farm.
6500lbs of fish is grown @ the land pavilion each year – most is consumed in their Restaurants.
Genetic Selection – produces better yields.
Vertical Growing – produces better air flow
Grow more in less space
Beneficial Insects
Disease and pests are a big concern for all greenhouse gardeners
And, if they could grow in a cramped little space ship with limited needs for growing healthy plants to help sustain the astronauts, why not grow some of what you need right at home?
